Split Sheets
Why are
split sheets important? Well, let’s see.
First off, you need to understand that under current copyright law, all writers
of a song share equal stakes unless otherwise specified and that specification
is made with a split sheet. A split
sheet specifies both the writer’s and publisher’s credit percentages. On one note, if the publisher’s credit is not
specified then the publishing is collected by a PRO (Performing Rights Organization such as BMI or ASCAP) for said writers in equal
proportions. Ok, so, in essence, the
split sheet show who owns what and how much of it each individual owns. Always
use a split sheet on every song that you record because people tend to have
selective, amnesia when the money comes rolling in. I know it may seem tedious but staying on top
of your business is important. Keep
blank split sheets with you just like you do a wallet or purse because it all
boils down to being a representation of a wallet or purse.
